So we finally decided to share our before and after work on our house. We bought a house with good bones about a year ago and proceeded to re do everything. And I do mean everything. We have done the whole house but in this post I will show the living room/dining room/kitchen combo. So without further ado here are the before pics….
Right after closing we started demo……
After ripping out some walls we put in a 21ft beam where a the wall between the kitchen/dining room and the living room used to be. This was scary but we had some structural engineering help and luckily I have an architect in the family so we were able to size the beam and brace the second floor up while we put the beam in place. The beam was 14″ tall so we cut into the floor joists on the second floor and hung joist hangers on it to support the upper floor joists. We had to reinforce some posts in the basement to carry the weight all of the way to the foundation but all in all went over pretty well. We had the ceilings re-plastered and all of the walls touched up.
Then we had to put it all back together. We started with the flooring and had all of the floors refinished. Our goal was to go natural color but after we sanded it we found a water stain in the middle of the living room so we had the floors stained darker to blend in.
I ordered cabinets online at kichencabinetkings.com . They were super helpful and were able to give me a 3d rendering of the cabinets I wanted. After making some changes and moving stuff around I ordered and a couple of days later a tractor trailer arrived with 3 pallets of cabinets. I installed the main cabinets before the floors were done but waited on the installation of the island because we had some floor repairs to complete.
We put the finishing touches on with light fixtures and silestone countertops from Home Depot. Keri found some all brass dipped in chrome faucets for everything in our house from Kingston Brass. The are very good quality and not very expensive. We did the sink faucet and the pot filler faucet above the stove. We finished it off with a Bertazonni Gas Range that is awesome! We got it from Ferguson and it was very reasonable for a high end range and we love it. It came with a hood but we had already bought online that was the style we were looking for. We picked up all of our other appliances from Home Depot. I even put a valve in so I could hook up a coffee maker directly to the water supply (Mark’s idea).
Jerry painted everything and here is the finished product!!! Just kidding we still have crown molding and backsplash to do so Keri said I had to put ALMOST Finished product!!!
Sorry about the mess in the pictures! These are not wife approved but it turns out we don’t take pictures when it is clean. Let us know what you think. Like I said, we still have some work to do but at least 95% complete. I’ll discuss the built in bookcase later and I’ll be showing the master suite next so stay tuned! Couldn’t have done it without Larry, Teddy, Mark, Rob, Jerry and of course my wife and in-laws who were watching the kids while I worked on it every night!
