According to my research on the interwebs, the Wright Brothers first flight was about 113 years ago. This great World Wide Web has also informed me that there is an Italian lady that is living and 116 years old. That means in her lifetime we went from the dream of man flying through the sky like a bird to flying a banner over Myrtle beach advertising boogie boards for $3.99 and a free hermit crab. If Orville and Wilbur could see us now. Maybe the whole let’s make an airplane thing was just from a marketing brainstorming session for their bike store. Here’s how I imagine the conversation:
Hey Orville, yes Wilbur, how can we tell more people about our bikes? This word of mouth thing is for the birds. Orville did you just say birds? Yes. I got a great idea, let’s make a bike that flys through the air like a bird and while people are sitting on the beach not riding bikes we can drag a banner behind our flying bike telling them to buy our bikes. Because people don’t go to the beach to relax by the ocean after a long week of selling encyclopedias ( because that’s what everyone did then), they come to the beach to find out what sales they are missing out on low flying bird bikes. Great idea Wilbur I think your on to something. Let’s get to work.
Out of that conversation came one of the greatest inventions ever made. If not for two brothers in Kitty Hawk we might not know that Pirate Voyage was still a thing or the best place to buy beach towels that look like women in bikinis with no head. We would just have to relax on the beach without a chain gang of advertisements flying over head just having to listen to the soothing sound of the ocean waves. If we can remove the relaxation from sitting on the beach with advertisements where else could we take advantage of people that don’t know they need stuff because they are too busy relaxing. I for one think we should have banner planes fly over lakes, pools, spas, or even national parks. I mean are we really honoring the wright brothers achievement if we don’t flood every place we find peaceful with product placement. Come on America we are better than that!
